Assignment 13: Research and Inspiration

What is exquisite corpse?
Exquisite corpse is a method by which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exquisite_corpse)


Where did it come from?
The technique was invented by Surrealists and is similar to an old parlour game called Consequences in which players write in turn on a sheet of paper, fold it to conceal part of the writing, and then pass it to the next player for a further contribution. 1920s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exquisite_corpse)


What is surrealism?

A 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind. (wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn) Adjectives- funny, unique, interesting I like how nothing goes together, but it still looks good.  I picked it because of the mustache:) I like it because its funny.

The Creative Process

Why do we need a process?
- It will improve consistency
- time management
- quality of your work
- communicate more effectively and in a more professional manor

Steps to the creative process
1) Research- The more you know, the easier your project will be. Research on the internet, by meeting with your client, or by looking around.
2) Brainstorming/Inspiration- talk with people, come up with adjectives that describe the project; Ask these questions- What kind of message am I trying to communicate?, Who is my audience?, What kind of color/style will work for this audience?
3) Sketching- quick drawings for ideas, consider placement of elements
4) Execution- using research, brainstorming, inspiration, and sketches to implement ideas
5) Critique/Revise- look at your design objectively, make sure your design effectively conveys the message

Photo Compostition

Snapshot- a quick shot, often spontaneous, taken to record a moment in time
Photograph- an image taken with care and thought

Rules of Composition

Rule of thirds- imaginary lines drawn dividing the frame of your camera into thirds both horizontally and vertically
place the horizon line at the top or bottom horizontal divider, fill up the entire frame with the subject for a close up image, or hit an intersection
Leading lines- use the lines created within the foreground or background of the composition to lead the viewer's eye through the photo
lines can draw attention to one or more intended subjects or a single focal point
Point of view- change the way your subject is perceived by changing the camera position
If you are photographing a subject that you want to seem very tall, compose the short so that the camera is looking upwards
If you want the subject to look small, compose the shot so that the camera is looking downwards
Simplicity- keep your backing simple and clear of clutter
The mood and effectiveness of a photo can be altered by what is in the background
A chaotic composition will cause the viewer to look away

Semester Reflection

During this semester, I learned a lot about graphic design. I learned many tools and effects and programs within Illustrator and Photoshop. Now I really appericiate what graphic designers do because I found some of the things we did hard. Next semester, I would like to learn to do more collages and be able to use colors in our designs. I would also like to do more things using the pen tool and like the cross the road assignment.

Review Week 17

Yes I did learn something. I learned new vocab words like counter, bowl, spine, terminal, stem, and ligature. I also learned that serifs are just the parts that extend, not the entire dash/line at teh bottom of a letter. I aslo learned the difference between adnate and abrupt serifs.

Define typography.
Typography is the art of expressing ideas through the selection of appropriate typefaces.

What is a portfolio?
Art that you did to represent what you made that you bring to show colleges.
What is the importance of a portfolio?
It shows the college what you do and what you can do.

Review Week 13

Repetition- The pirtues of Marilyn are repeated throughout the design, but each is different.



Unity- Similar colors are used as well as shapes are used in this design to give the design a feeling of unity.



Variety- Iin this design, different colors are used for the flowers. This variety makes the design more interesting than it would be if the colors were all the same.



Contrast- The light backgorund helps this dark car to stand out.




Rhythm- This deisgn uses similar lines to direct the viewers attention throughtout the design.



Emphasis- The lighter hot air balloons stand out against the darker background in order to make the viewer look at the hot air balloons first.

Balance- The thickness of the letters differs in this design to give it a more interesting feeling.

Scale- The books are sized in order to make it look like they are comig towards the viewer. The books that are smaller are supposed to look like they're farther away, and visa versa.

How do you add a layer mask to a particular layer?
by clicking on the icon on the bottom of the layers palette that looks like a circle in a square
What two colors are used to create the mask?
black and white
Describe the process of using a layer mask.
Layer masks hide selected parts of an image. Black takes away, and white brings back.
