A vector based design is one that can be scaled and resized without losing quality. It is created in Illustrator with lines, shapes, and curves.

Color can be used to make things stand out (bright color surrounded by neutral) or to show mood.

Raster-based images are created in Photoshop. Raster-based graphics are made up of pixels and cannot be resized without changing quality. Higher quality=higher resolution and more pixels.

The manipulation of size and resolution will change the quality of digital images. Higher resolution=better quality. Raster-based images cannot be resized without damaging quality, unlike vector-based images, which can be resized to any size with the same quality.

The principles of design are:
Repetition is used to repeat an image/word in a design.
Proportion/scale is used to decide the appropriate size for objects in a design.
Balance is used to distribute heavy and light elements in a design.
Emphasis is used to put the focus on one part of the design.
Unity is used to create a feeling of wholeness is a design.
Variety is used to keep the design interesting by varying colors, textures, or shapes.
Rhythm is used to organize movement in a design by using some same elements, but not in a pattern.

Type can add interest to a design. Designers can make it legible or chose to make it a design within itself.

Designers use pay layout programs to make newsletters, magazines, brochure, etc. Page layout programs are great for manipulating/organizing text.

1) Research- The more you know, the easier your project will be. Research on the internet, by meeting with your client, or by looking around.
2) Brainstorming/Inspiration- talk with people, come up with adjectives that describe the project; Ask these questions- What kind of message am I trying to communicate?, Who is my audience?, What kind of color/style will work for this audience?
3) Sketching- quick drawings for ideas, consider placement of elements
4) Execution- using research, brainstorming, inspiration, and sketches to implement ideas
5) Critique/Revise- look at your design objectively, make sure your design effectively conveys the message
