Visual Organization

Eye movement

• Not directing the audience through a design is misdirecting.
• The typical eye moves left to right, top to bottom
• Controlling eye movement within a composition is a matter of directing the natural scanning   tendency of the viewer's eye
• The eye tends to gravitate towards areas of complexity first. I pictures of people, the eye is always attracted to the face and particularly the eye.
• Light areas of a composition will attract the eye, especially when adjacent to a dark area.
• Diagonal lines or edges will guide eye movement
• Optical center- the spot where the human eye goes to, it takes a compelling element to draw eye way
• Z Pattern- how the eye sweeps through a page in a Z motion
• job as graphic designer= lead viewers through page

Fonts

• no more than 2 fonts total that complement each other in one composition
• don't use all upper caps
• chose the right font (fits theme & tone)
• don't over use fancy or over-complicated fonts

Visual Hierarchy

• will establish a focal point based
• create an oder of elements

The Grid

• a way of organizing content on a page, using any combination of margins, guidelines, rows, and columns
• instituted by Modernism (1950s)
• can assist the audience by breaking info into manageable chunks and establishing relationships between text and images
• a grid consists of a distinct of alignment-based relationships that act as guides for distributing elements across a format
• every design is different' therefore, every design will require a different grid structure- one that addresses the particular elements within the design

Assignment 13: Research and Inspiration

What is exquisite corpse?
Exquisite corpse is a method by which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exquisite_corpse)


Where did it come from?
The technique was invented by Surrealists and is similar to an old parlour game called Consequences in which players write in turn on a sheet of paper, fold it to conceal part of the writing, and then pass it to the next player for a further contribution. 1920s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exquisite_corpse)


What is surrealism?

A 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind. (wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn) Adjectives- funny, unique, interesting I like how nothing goes together, but it still looks good.  I picked it because of the mustache:) I like it because its funny.

The Creative Process

Why do we need a process?
- It will improve consistency
- time management
- quality of your work
- communicate more effectively and in a more professional manor

Steps to the creative process
1) Research- The more you know, the easier your project will be. Research on the internet, by meeting with your client, or by looking around.
2) Brainstorming/Inspiration- talk with people, come up with adjectives that describe the project; Ask these questions- What kind of message am I trying to communicate?, Who is my audience?, What kind of color/style will work for this audience?
3) Sketching- quick drawings for ideas, consider placement of elements
4) Execution- using research, brainstorming, inspiration, and sketches to implement ideas
5) Critique/Revise- look at your design objectively, make sure your design effectively conveys the message

Photo Compostition

Snapshot- a quick shot, often spontaneous, taken to record a moment in time
Photograph- an image taken with care and thought

Rules of Composition

Rule of thirds- imaginary lines drawn dividing the frame of your camera into thirds both horizontally and vertically
place the horizon line at the top or bottom horizontal divider, fill up the entire frame with the subject for a close up image, or hit an intersection
Leading lines- use the lines created within the foreground or background of the composition to lead the viewer's eye through the photo
lines can draw attention to one or more intended subjects or a single focal point
Point of view- change the way your subject is perceived by changing the camera position
If you are photographing a subject that you want to seem very tall, compose the short so that the camera is looking upwards
If you want the subject to look small, compose the shot so that the camera is looking downwards
Simplicity- keep your backing simple and clear of clutter
The mood and effectiveness of a photo can be altered by what is in the background
A chaotic composition will cause the viewer to look away

Semester Reflection

During this semester, I learned a lot about graphic design. I learned many tools and effects and programs within Illustrator and Photoshop. Now I really appericiate what graphic designers do because I found some of the things we did hard. Next semester, I would like to learn to do more collages and be able to use colors in our designs. I would also like to do more things using the pen tool and like the cross the road assignment.

Review Week 17

Yes I did learn something. I learned new vocab words like counter, bowl, spine, terminal, stem, and ligature. I also learned that serifs are just the parts that extend, not the entire dash/line at teh bottom of a letter. I aslo learned the difference between adnate and abrupt serifs.
